Bowen Ranch & Sand Creek Battle Grounds
Located approximately 13 miles northwest of the town of Chivington in Cheyenne County, the Bowen Ranch hosts unique natural as well as American history features. The property contains thousands of acres of sandsage and shortgrass prairie uplands as well as three miles of Big Sandy Creek. This site features several permanent springs, and a black-tailed prairie-dog town that regularly has Mountain Plover, Burrowing Owl, Ferruginous Hawk, and Golden Eagle. The ranch also has potential for Lesser Prairie Chicken, although none have recently been documented. Artifacts collected by the Bowens have shown that a portion of the Sand Creek Massacre occurred on their ranch. The Bowen Ranch is only open to guided tours; they cater to nature watchers and history buffs alike.
