Winner of the Innovation in Conservation Award

The Colorado Birding Trail is the 2015 winner of the Innovation in Conservation Award presented by Palmer Land Trust. The Colorado Birding Trail is a major nature tourism initiative to promote outdoor recreation, conservation of resources by private landowners, and a diversified income for rural economies. One of the most unique features of the trail is the private lands that have been opened to visitation only through their participation as sites on the trail.

What is the Birding Trail?

The Colorado Birding Trail is a major nature tourism initiative to promote responsible outdoor recreation and conservation of Colorado’s natural resources. Working with private landowners, the Trail helps promote travel to agricultural landscapes, contributing to a diversified income for rural economies. The Birding Trail links these private sites with public parks and open spaces, creating a network of areas visitors can observe birds and other wildlife, as well as archaeological and paleontological treasures.3

Who is building the Trail?

Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Colorado Audubon, Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (formerly Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory), Colorado Field Ornithologists, and Playa Lakes Joint Venture were the initial members of this strategic partnership. Colorado Parks and Wildlife, with funding from Great Outdoors Colorado lottery proceeds, has managed the development of a birding trail that was created in 4 phases. We are excited to announce that, with the culmination of the newest Northeast Region Trail, the Colorado Birding Trail is now complete!

Thanks to the Partners!

The Colorado Birding Trail was made possible by a joint effort of many federal, state and non-profit agencies and most especially, the people of Colorado. Meet the Partners!
