We strongly encourage anyone visiting the back roads of Colorado to be prepared. Make sure you have a good road atlas, food, water, proper clothing and some sunscreen. We also suggest bringing a pair of binoculars and bird book or wildlife viewing guide.

Mount Blue Sky Wildlife Viewing
Colorado Parks and Wildlife partners with City of Denver Mountain Parks and the US Forest Service to provide alpine-related education for visitors to the mountain. Stop by and visit our dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers as they help you spot the animals living in the harsh land above the trees! Check out wildlife artifacts, see high-altitude wildlife, and learn how to recreate responsibly on the sensitive alpine tundra. NOTE: According to the CDOT website road construction was completed in 2025. The road from Echo Lake Lodge to the top of Mount Blue Sky is scheduled to open on Memorial Day weekend …

Orient Mine Bat Watching
A Southwest region event Bat watching available all summer from June through August through the Orient Land Trust. This hike is open to the public, and we kindly request that all guests use the Black Canyon Trailhead to access the mine. The road to this trailhead is primitive and unmaintained, and it may not be passable without a high-clearance vehicle.

Yampa Valley Crane Festival
The Greater Sandhill Crane is an iconic species of the Yampa Valley. In late summer and early fall, hundreds of cranes from the Rocky Mountain flock join the local birds to rest and feed before continuing their journey south. The festival includes daily crane viewings, expert speakers, live raptors, films, art exhibits, workshops, family activities and more.
