There is some nice remnant shortgrass prairie in the first three miles of County Road 40 north of the Kiowa County border. Burrowing Owl, Long-billed Curlew and Grasshopper Sparrow all breed here, but the land ownership is private, so please stay on the roads.

Directions: From Cheyenne Wells, go south on US-385 for 9 miles to CR G. Take a right (west) onto CR G and go 6 miles to CR 40. Turn left (south) on CR 40 and begin scanning the roadsides. You will reach CR C in 4 miles.
