40th Annual Monte Vista Crane Festival is nearly here! March 10-12

Like many bird species, sandhill cranes embark on long, seasonal migrations. While traveling migration routes, they take advantage of habitats along the way. Multitudes of migrating cranes descend upon grainfields for food and rest.

These “stopover” locations provide perfect viewing opportunities, and enthusiastic birders embark on their own migrations to observe these impressive cranes congregations. The San Luis Valley in southern Colorado is one of the most famous stopovers.

The festival offers crane viewing tours, educational talks, photography workshops, and a craft fair. “Wings Over Water”, a film on migratory journeys narrated by Michael Keaton, will be shown on the first and last days of the festival.

Join fellow birders for this now 40-year-old tradition!
